Happy Thursday everyone!
I was excited when I saw Sephora had a mini Bobbi Brown Shadow Stick as part of their rewards system and with my new found appreciation for shadow sticks, I had to pick one up.
Eyeshadow sticks are a convenient item to have as they are quick and easy to apply, streamlining your makeup routine when you’re in a hurry. You just glide the product on your eyelid and underneath your bottom lash line, with minimal to no blending required. There’s no worry about powdery fallout and you can store these in your purse for on the go.
As you already know, NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil was included in my Summer Must Have On the Go Beauty and with great reviews, I wanted to see how it compared to the Bobbi Brown ones. So, let’s get started.
Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Stick in Shadow, $29 (smokey blue grey)
Described as “a long-lasting, waterproof eye shadow that glides on easy like a stroke of genius.” It’s a smokey blue grey color that has a matte texture (i.e. no shimmer)
Pros
Long lasting and won’t crease with a primer
Glides on the eyelid easily
Rich pigmentation
Good variety of shades
Twist up container so you don’t need a sharpener
Cons
Splurge item at $29 each (I have a sample so the actual product is bigger)
It takes a little bit of effort to blend in
Heat mushes up the texture which can affect the application process
Wide rounded tip makes it difficult to apply on the waterline
Overall: I do like this product but I don’t love it. Although the pigmentation is amazing and it doesn’t crease, I found blending out this product was difficult to do, perhaps because of the matte texture. You are required to blend this out since it’s a darker color and if you don’t want harsh lines to show. One thing worth mentioning is that since the weather has been hot, somehow the heat really softened it up and caused a mushy like consistency. While it still retained its shape, when I applied it, it kind of broke off a little.
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Iced Mocha
Described as “a radiant eye liner that also doubles as an eye shadow.” It’s a bronzey, gold color that has a little bit of shimmer.
Pros
Budget friendly $4.50
Easy application + formula glides on easy
A wide range of colors
Pencil like tip makes it easy to line the waterline
Cons
Requires a larger sharpener
Does tend to crease after a while even with primer
Takes a few passes to build up the color
Overall: I love everything about the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil except the wear time. I get about 5 hours of wear before it starts to crease, about 3 if it is really hot an humid outside. I then find myself needing to reapply or at least blend in the product so that the crease marks don’t show. Applying a similar shadow underneath does help with this product staying on longer but it adds an extra step. However, this blends easily and I had no problem using it as a liner, thanks to the pencil like tip- perfect for creating a quick smokey eye look.
Have you tried shadow sticks? Which ones are your favorite?
Stephanie
Great review!! Thanks so much for sharing! I think I would like the NYX better too especially for the price! However, I do love the shade of the Bobbi Brown stick! Check out my blog if you would like http://everythingandnothin.com/! Have a BEAUTIFUL day!
Oh I know what you mean. Bobbi Brown has very rich shades and they do last but the NYX is just better in application and feel. Of course it doesn’t hurt that it’s also budget friendly. Will check out your blog. Thanks for stopping by and leaving me a comment. 🙂
I totally agree!!!
I’ve tried the Bobbi Brown shadow stick before. Unless I applied it wrong, it didn’t look that good on me hahaha
I’m wondering if it has to do with the fact that the tip is wide. I do love the shades but you it needs to be stellar in every aspect if I will spend $29 on one. 🙂
You’re right! It has to be stellar if you’re going to spend a pretty penny on makeup 🙂
Yes, Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliners on the other hand are very good! Do try them out if you haven’t already. Gorgeous shades and I love the staying power + easy application. 🙂
Oh I haven’t tried out the eyeliners! But I am intrigued! 🙂 Yayyyy
I get the gel ones in the glass pots and I must say it is well worth the money. 🙂 They have a very pretty blue shade, Denim Ink that is so nice. I used to have Caviar Ink which is a black/brown that was so lovely. 🙂
That’s really good to know! That name Caviar Ink sounds so appealing!
It’s soo nice! 🙂 And I agree, it sounds fancy.
??
My favorite was the Urban Decay one, but I don’t think they make it anymore.
I love nyx jumbo eye pencils! I haven’t tried out that bronze shade but it looks beautiful!
I’m a sucker for bronze shades and this one fits the bill perfectly! 🙂
I am too! It’s my favorite color to make my eyes pop! I’ll have to pick up this one to add to my collection! 🙂
I think you’ll love it! 🙂
I think so too!! It doesn’t hurt that it’s so affordable either! I was thinking of making an ulta trip today so I will be adding this to my list!
Can’t wait to hear what you think. 🙂
Great review Stephie – I haven’t tried any of these ones but currently using the Bourjois version, have to say I’m really liking it as it’s quick to apply for work 🙂 XXX
You know, I’ve heard a lot of that brand but have yet to try them. Where did you purchase yours? Aren’t these so convenient? Perfect when you’re on the go or any day really. 🙂
I got mine from Boots here in N.Ireland – they are phenomenal. Cannot recommend them enough, and wow do they last! Well worth the money Stephie which is well under £10. Very impressed… such a time saver 😉 hehe xxx
I will keep an eye out for them then-thank you! Gotta love quick and easy at times. 🙂
I use NYX milk all the time. I even have a back up 🙂
I’ve heard a lot about Milk. I have a Rimmel one right now but if I ever finish that one, I’ll try Milk. 🙂
It makes colorful eye shadows really pop!
I too, find the NYX jumbo pencils to have poor longevity on my lids! Very disappointing. One of my favourite cream eye pencils is actually the Sephora brand, Jumbo Liner 12HR wear – they office a wide array of shades and they are BUDGE PROOF! They’re not too expensive either, and if you wait for the holiday time, they come in sets which is even cheaper. Highly recommended. Another favourite is the Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks – beautiful shades and no sharpening required (but pricey)
I haven’t tried the Sephora brand ones but I will keep an eye out for them come the holiday season. I’ve heard great things about the LM Caviar Sticks too. Decisions, decisions, lol. Thanks so much for the recommendations. 🙂
I like using the NYX pencils as a base under similar colored shadows. Really helps the colors pop.
Agreed! I did the opposite, using a base underneath the pencils but it does enhance the shades and in my opinion, make them last longer.:)
Great review, thank you. I like products by NYX but i’ve never seen this type of pencils in stores. May be the are not sold in my country..
Thanks! Hopefully they carry them soon! I know Rimmel carries similar products if you want to look into that. 🙂
Hey Stephie… great review. I guess I’m going to try the NYX stick 🙂
Thanks!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy them! 🙂
